About the 3G Shutdown
3G networks are being decommissioned in Australia
There is still time to make plans for the switch-off. Just as happened with 2G networks in Australia, the march of technology and mobile networks means that all three major Australian mobile networks have made plans for the shift away from 3G network technology.
Telstra 3G Shutdown:
What we know so far is that Telstra is furthest along the path of killing off its 3G networks. In March 2019, it ceased using the 2,100Mhz 3G frequency across Australia, which made a number of much older 3G handsets inoperable.
In October 2019, Telstra laid out its timeline for 3G shutdown in Australia, committing to switching off all of its remaining 850Mhz 3G by June 2024.
Telstra's statement also gives details on its plans for expanding its 4G coverage and eventually 5G coverage to meet the needs of those in 3G-only areas.
Optus 3G Shutdown:
What we know so far with Optus is that 5G plans now encompass both in-home 5G fixed broadband and an expanding range of 5G handset devices, they have advised that the shutdown of its 3G networks has begun and will be completed in September 2024.
It is apparent that should & 3G service fail at the tower it will not be replaced or repaired leaving for 4G and 5G only. In many cases when 5G has been installed on the tower, 3G has been removed.
Vodafone 3G Shutdown:
Vodafone have announced that the plan to have the entire Vodafone/TPG 3G network clised by 15 Decemver 2023.
3G networks are already shut down nationally. 2024 will be the finish and when the last 3G service is removed.
It is now time to begin changing out all your 3G devices as soon as possible.
What does this mean for your Security Business?
What it means is that all alarm communication devices that rely purely on a 3G connection will stop being able to access networks in Australia. This includes the Direct Wireless 3G DTU's.
This won't happen suddenly, although 3G is already removed from a lot of locations. It is time to begin the replacement of these units.
